Info for Parents ans Teachers graphic

Parents, teachers and those working with youth will find many services and materials to encourage a child's growth and well-being. Ask a youth services librarian for reading recommendations, reference assistance, programming listings, special activities, booklists or library tour information.

Parenting Collections
Selected branches maintain parenting collections containing books, videos and other materials on reading recommendations, child development, reading readiness, discipline, children's health, home schooling, party planning, creative play, learning disabilities, and traveling with children.

Children's Internet Access

Picture of Kids at PCsChildren may gain access to the Internet at all branches of the Mercer County Library System with their library card. An internet-only card may be purchased for $2.00 by those who are ineligible for a library card.

The Internet is a global electronic information network that provides dynamic resources and facilitates communication for its users. The Library does not monitor, censor or control information accessed through the Internet and cannot be held responsible for its content. The Internet may contain material of a controversial or mature nature. Parents and guardians of minor children, not the Library staff, are responsible for their children's use of the Internet in the Library. Parents wishing to control the materials to which their children are exposed are expected to provide sufficient supervision of their children to accomplish this. Parents are also encouraged to discuss the issues of online safety with their children.

Group Visits

Each year many groups visit the Mercer County Library for tours and library instruction. These groups include preschools, public school classes and scout troops. Call or stop in at your local branch to arrange for a group visit. Preference for group tours will be given to groups and schools from member municipalities of the Mercer County Library System. Non-member groups, and groups from other townships will be accommodated at the discretion and availability of the local youth services staff.

Assignment Alerts & Temporary Reference

In some locations, when large school assignments are given, a portion of our circulating collection on that topic is pulled and reserved for in-library use only. Teachers are encouraged to email their assignment alerts to their local branch to inform library staff of upcoming assignments.

Educational Software

A variety of educational games are loaded into our computers for children ages 3 and up. Many more titles are also available for home use. These are listed in the catalog under the subject heading CD-ROMS.

Children's Library Cards and Borrowing Privileges

Children who live in, or attend school in a member municipality of the Mercer County Library System (including East Windsor, Ewing, Hightstown, Hopewell Township, Lawrenceville, Robbinsville, or West Windsor) may obtain a free library card. Children under the age of 14 may obtain a card with a parent or guardian's signature. Students who do not reside in a member municipality, but attend public or private schools in a member municipality, or who temporarily reside in a member municipality in order to attend school, may be issued a card, free of charge, upon presentation of proof of current-year school registration and a printed form of current address. (Adults should refer to the Patron Policies Manual for further details on how to obtain a library card.)

Bibliographies

A variety of booklists are available on particular reading genres by age and grade level. Availability varies from branch to branch, but many lists are available on MCL's website.

Displays

Space is available for youth groups in the community to display their art work. Glass display cases are also available. Check branch locations for availability and details.
