Google Maps is a Google service offering powerful, user-friendly mapping technology and local business information -- including business locations, contact information, and driving directions.

Historical Atlas of the Twentieth Century
Contains a series of world maps that reflect changes over the 20th Century. Lists a variety of historical information, links and essays.

Historical U.S. Map Collection
Historical maps of the United States contained in the Perry-Castaņeda Library Map Collection of the University of Texas at Austin. Includes maps of ancient Native American tribes, routes of various journeys of exploration, historical street maps and others.

Map Machine
Contains maps and statistical information from National Geographic. Users can print maps of various locations and link to other sources.

Mapquest World Atlas
This online atlas offers printable maps of continents, regions and individual countries. Maps are accompanied by basic facts on each country such as population, area, languages, industry, etc.

Online World Atlas at About.com
Excellent site that contains maps and statistical information on countries, continents and oceans world wide. Contains travel and tourism information.

Perry-Castaņeda Map Collection
The Perry-Castaņeda Map Collection contains scanned images of maps held by the University of Texas at Austin in its Library map collection. They include current political and geographical maps as well as some historical maps. [Add proviso about viewing the images]

Princeton University Library Digital Map Collection & Geographic Data Collection
Princeton University Library Digital Map Collection & Geographic Data Collection; this collection includes cartographic images of many places around the world drawn at various points in history. In addition, the collection includes the Sanborn Co. Fire Insurance Maps of localities in New Jersey. These are precise maps of property lots created for the fire insurance industry.

Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing system [TIGER] Homepage
TMS is a geographic map service which produces public domain GIF images of map data which is derived from Tiger/LineŽ data. The primary goal of the service is to provide a public resource for generating high-quality, detailed maps of coverage within the United States and outlying areas, using public geographic data source.

U.S. Board on Geographic Names (U.S. Geological Survey)
This site offers access to a database containing information on foreign and domestic place names, Antarctic names and undersea features. Records include topographical and geological information, as well as mapping images utilizing Google, Yahoo, Microsoft Virtual Earth and other services for localization.

U.S. Gazetteer
U.S. Gazetteer: This gazetteer is used to identify places to view with the Tiger Map Server. You can search for places, counties or MCDs by entering the name and state abbreviation (optional), or 5-digit zip code. Note: ZIP code boundaries do not necessarily match place boundaries.

USA CityLink Project
USA CityLink Project. Begun in 1994, this site features a listing of states and cities offering information on travel, tourism, and relocation. There are some detailed city guides as well as official and independent city and state websites.

Driving Directions

AAA (Triple A)
This portion of the AAA site offers driving directions between geographic points.

Expedia Maps 
This site offers driving directions, maps and local information for areas in the United States, as well as detailed maps, down to the regional level, for locations in other countries, particularly Europe and North America.

How Far Is It?
This service enables users to find the latitude and longitude of two places and then calculates the distance between them. It also provides maps of the two places.

MapQuest
MapQuest is a popular provider of driving directions between geographic points, along with other travel information such as dining and lodging establishments, and surveys of gasoline prices at stations located within a geographic area.
