Hickory Corner
Branch As one of the largest eastern Branches of the Mercer County Library System, the Hickory Corner Library is a hub of activity for our community. The Branch offers a place to study, read or ask for reference assistance. Patrons can look though a plethora of books and movies, and families can take advantage of programming, events, or just come to play with the puzzles and browse books. “Everyone working at this Branch is always very helpful and seems genuinely happy to meet and greet you.”* stated a library patron in 2011. “I use the library to supplement my classroom literature and kids books,”* said a local teacher. With the recent arrival of Youth Service Librarian, Andrea Lenhardt, the Hickory Corner Branch now offers a full array of Baby and Story Times for children 3 months to 5 years old, as well as various programs and events for children and teens of all ages. Stop by and meet Miss Andrea who will suggest good books to read, or help find the right resource for a homework assignment. No question goes unanswered by the knowledgeable and friendly library staff. The reference librarians are happy to answer your inquiries using web-based sources, as well as traditional materials. They are the perfect guides to help you learn new technologies to access information. They can help you navigate the library website, which makes over thirty databases available for homework, job hunting, genealogy and other information pursuits. At the Hickory Corner Branch there are several meeting rooms are available for public use. Throughout the year, scout troops, the Friends of the Hickory Corner Library, and other community groups with interests ranging from educational discussions to fiber arts, also use the library as their meeting place. Adult programs on a variety of subjects, including heath issues, legal issues, education, exercise and genealogy are offered at the Branch. “The programs are helpful and interesting,”* a recent participant reported. Keeping up with new interests, an adult Zumba class will be offered for the first time. In addition to library resources, programs and events, the library offers free computer classes in a comfortable, patient setting. Classes include: PC basics, Internet, MS Word, e-mail and the library catalog. Keep an eye out for our expanding Spanish Language Collection, with books for adult and juvenile readers. An extensive DVD collection is grouped by genre, including documentary, drama, foreign films, including Bollywood, T.V. series, comedies, and horror categories. In September of 2011, we will begin Saturday classes for persons who are unfamiliar with the English language or U.S. culture. The classes are suitable for native speakers of any language, regardless of the current level of English language skills. Beginning speakers of English are especially welcome. Exhibitors have ranged in age from 6 to 80-plus -- representing, like the collections themselves, every segment of the community as they share their rubber ducks, yo-yos, telegraph insulators, perfume bottles, and art from various cultures. *Patron comment from Snapshot Day 2011
